The health and safety at work act 1974 defines the structure of regulation and enforcement of
health and safety in a workplace. It was set up to ensure the health and safety of employees. The
pros for this act are that it keeps employees much safer while at work, it creates staff loyalty, and it
reduces the loss of valuable resources however, it can cost people a lot of money to implement and
maintain and there is only so much an employer can do to keep their employees safe.

The second act is RIDDOR, also known as Reporting in injuries, Diseases, Dangerous Occurrences
Regulations 1995. If your injured at work, then it needs to be reported whether it is major or minor.
The pros are that it can help prevent further injuries for the same accident and the cons for this act
are that people may take advantage of it and report incidents that didn’t happen.

The third act is COSHH also known as Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. This act was
created to protect employees and other people from hazardous substances. This act introduced risk
assessments, control exposure and incident planning. A pro for this act is that it assists the public
services when they turn up to a scene that includes a chemical or hazardous spillage because it
informs them what substance it is and they can then figure out how to treat it. The cons for this act
is that if it isn’t managed properly then they could face potential hazardous materials in the wrong
way.

HACCPs, also known as Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points is an act that was created specifically
for food safety and for the prevention of hazard rather than final inspection. The pros for this act
are; it is internationally recognised, it can identify hazards for food and it provides the business with
a marketing tool and competitive advantage. The cons for this act are the costs of monitoring, the
need to train supervisors and product staff, cost of development and implementation and reduced
staff time available for other tasks.
