PROBLEM 3: AUTONOMY AND WILLPOWER:
Part 1:

Article 1: de Vries, J.D. (2020) Summary mini theories underlying
Self Determnation Theory.
Basic Needs Theory
Focus: basic psychological needs

Elaborates the concept of 3 psychological needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness) and specifies
their relation to intrinsic motivation, high quiality engagement, effective functioning and
psychological well-being

Psychological needs --- intrinsic motivation + engagement + functioning + well-being

Organismic Integration Theory (Deci & Ryan)
Focus: extrinsic motivation

Introduces types of extrinsic motivation and specifies the antecedents, characteristics and
consequences of each type.

,Goal Contents Theory
Focus: intrinsic goals vs extrinsic goals

Distinguishes intrinsic goals from extrinsic goals to explain how the former supports psychological
needs and well-being whereas the latter neglects these needs and fosters ill being.

Cognitive evaluation theory
Focus: external events

Predicts the effect that any external event will have on intrinsic motivation. Explains why some
external events support autonomy, competence and intrinsic motivations while other events
interfere.

Causality Orientations Theory
Focus: Individual differences

Identifies individual differences in motivation and engagement. To engage themselves some
students rely on autonomous guides to action while others rely on controlling and environmental
guides

, Article 2: Deci, E.L. (2008) Facilitating optimal motivation and
psychological well-being across life domains.
1. Self Determination Theory
Aanname 1: mensen hebben 3 psychologische basisbehoeftes (autonomy / competence /
relatedness)

uitkomst (extern)
