Ways of improving motivation in an organisational setting

Encouraging more teamwork

There are many methods that businesses can use to increase employee motivation and
production levels within the business. One way to increase motivation is by encouraging
more teamwork. Teamwork in the workplace is when the employees get together and share
the workload, ideas and perspectives. The reason teamwork increases motivation is that it
increases creativity and learning, as in teamwork all the employees get to brainstorm the
ideas together, and combining all the viewpoints from each individual helps come up with
the most effective ways and solutions.

‘’Brainstorming ideas as a group prevents stale viewpoints that often come out of working
solo. Combining unique perspectives from each team member creates more effective selling
solutions.’’ When the employees know that their ideas are being used, this will help increase
their motivation. Teamwork in the workplace would make the employees feel more part of
the organisation and more involved with the process, and this will motivate them to work
hard because they know that their hard work is helping others in the business. ‘’Studies
have found that 39% of employees believe that people within their company don’t
collaborate often enough.’’ This shows the number of employees that believe they do work
as a team often enough, which leads to a decrease in motivation levels, 39% would want to
work more in teams.

In Tesco, the employees should be encouraged to share ideas such as on different selling
techniques or such as the marketing team working together to come up with new
advertising methods. Tesco can encourage more teamwork within their store by having
strong leadership skills, such as having a person that will be able to lead the others well and
that will be able to encourage people to collaborate and join. Working in groups will
benefit the employees because it will help them build friendships and social skills. Working
in teams motivates the employees because if they get along with others at work, this will be
happier to come to work every day as they have people that they want to see and
communicate them.

Team working creates more involvement within the business for employees, and if
employees feel more involved and valued they will be motivated to be productive. This links
to mayo’s theory, who believed that people are motivated by social interactions in the
workplace, such as communication, teamwork, increased involvement. ‘’The importance of
group working cannot be overstressed. It is the group that determines productivity, not pay
and not processes.’’ Mayo’s theory proves that encouraging teamwork in the workplace will
help increase motivation. ‘’When people come together they deliver more than they would
separately, and they are empowered to do it’’

Providing continuous feedback

The second way to improve motivation in the workplace is by providing continuous
feedback. Receiving feedback, either good or bad, shows the employee that they are part of
the company and that their actions affect the company and everyone in it. If the employees
