UNIT: 14 SPECIALIST TOURISM
P2: Explain the market factors that have led to developments in specialist tourism.
In this assignment, I will be explaining how the market factors have led to developments in
specialist tourism.
Socioeconomic factors-
Disposable income- disposable income is when people are getting more money as they are
getting higher paid jobs and more people are saving their money so they can go on holidays.
Over recent years the amount of disposable income a person has, has increased. This has
meant that people have more money for specialist tourism activities such adventure
holidays or city breaks that include some specialist activity such as kayaking, bungee
jumping, bird watching etc. The role
Leisure Time- More and more people find they have more leisure time, whether this from
early retirement and people want to get more out of their time or some people are now
getting paid for holiday time, they are taking off knowing that they will have money when
they come back. Gap years are also becoming increasingly popular where people are taking
a year out to just travel and let off some steam before starting out in ‘real life’. Packaged to
unpackaged is also a development that has increased leisure time, this is because people
can plan their holidays to make the most of their time off meaning they can book many
short breaks throughout the year.
Status- People are now going on holidays to improve their social status because they want
to look good in their society this could mean going on a holiday to a destination that is a
celebrity hotspot or also visiting to a destination to help or volunteer on a project such as
helping build a school, medical centre or other community facility. Response to social
change and trends is also a development for the status of specialist tourism because people
are wanting to show off that they are helping a community whilst on holiday rather than
spending a week on a beach.
Desire of new changes- Due to the development of the Internet and all the different types
of specialist holidays that are available. People are becoming more aware and more daring
to try new challenges than what used to be available. This could be going out of their
comfort zone and their normal routine for specific reason: helping building a school in a
developing country or camping out in rainforest. By people wanting new challenges, tour
operators are always finding a way to meet customer needs and expectations.
Self-actualisation- it is the realisation or fulfilment of one’s talents and potentialities,
especially as considered as a drive or need present in everyone.
