When an individual is following an exercise program, it is important that they consider the health
and safety when performing exercises. It is also important for their personal trainer to make their
clients fill out a PAR-Q form before they begin the program to help make it as safe as possible while
acknowledging their health history, including any health conditions or physical injuries. PAR-Q’s are
also designed to identify what exercise an individual may not be capable of doing or whether they
are able of doing any at all, therefore their trainer must use this knowledge to make a program that
contains exercises that are most suitable for them and their current level of fitness. For some
individuals, possibly the ones who have underlying health conditions or physical injuries, it is
important that they check with their GP before they decide to increase their current level of activity.

Another vital part of health and safety while exercising is conducting risk assessments. It should be
the first thing a trainer should do before asking their client to begin their workout because it helps
identify potential risks and hazards for their client. To do this they need to make a list of all of the
possible hazards within the area they will be doing their exercise. This basically means listing down
anything that has a potential to cause the client harm. Before a trainer creates a fitness plan, they
need to make a list of the exercises that they will be teaching them to do and what the possible
hazards and injures are to make them aware of the risks.

There are also serval other factors which need to be risk assessed before conducting any exercise.
My first example is surfaces because they need to be checked to ensure that it is an even ground and
if they are outside, it is important to check for holes in the ground or other obstructions which may
cause their client to fall and hurt themselves. It would also be advised to check the floor for any
liquid that may have been spilt to prevent slipping during the workout.

My second example is to check the weather before the session, however this will only apply if the
session is outdoors. This is so they can inform their client about what may be suitable to wear for the
weather on that day. This will be very important to do during the winter season because there can
be a risk of ice.

My third example is to risk assess the equipment that they will be making their client use. This could
mean ensuring that all of the machines and equipment are properly maintained and in good working
condition. It is important to do this to make sure that they don’t make their client use a faulty piece
of equipment; depending on the machine, it could have the possibility to injure them.

Before and after exercise, it is recommended that you should do some form of warm ups and cool
downs because they are a key part to preventing injuries. To begin with, a warm up is used to
prepare your body for physical activity. It does this by raising your body temperature, which then
leads to increasing the blood flow to your muscles.

To ensure that you warm up correctly, there are a few key points to remember. Firstly, it is
important to start slowly to allow your body to loosen up and to let your heart rate increase
gradually. It is also more effective and has a less chance of causing an injury if you do some dynamic
stretches as a warm up because it engages the muscles and warms them up in preparation for
exercise. A second way to warm up could be doing low to medium intensity on cardiovascular
