European Employment and Labour Law (2020-2021)

Session 1

Some guidelines about this course:

- Professor Filip Dorssemont
- Written exam (take home exam within a period of 2h, OPEN BOOK).
- 1 theoretical question + 1 or 2 questions about one of the landmark cases in the
Portfolio. It is important to know the cases by their names as we will refer to them. E.g.
Viking, Laval, etc.
- The preparation questions we have to solve before the sessions are not an example of
the exam difficulty, however very important to get an idea.

Example exam question: how do you see the evolution of social policy throughout the
different treaties?

- Assignment to analyse one case treated during the course (to be handed in 1 week
before exam = 50% of the mark). So it is a mini-paper = annotation of a CJEU case of
5 pages, according to a certain structure but adding a personal touch with own opinion
intelligently.

Class materials:

- Portfolio of cases and materials = can be brought to the exam
- Other documents which will be added at Canvas (much more elaborate than the subject
matter discussed in class) = very important to CITE THE PROFESSOR’S ARTICLES
POSTED ON CANVAS IN THE WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT.
- Some manuals (not compulsory to buy or know for the exam) but could be useful for
drafting of written assignment. E.g. B. Bercusson: European Labour Law, or C.
Barnard: EU Employment Law.
- Everything told in class is to be known for the exam.

AN INTRODUCTION
