A) Presenting 3 of your selected vocabulary items which would need to be concept checked.
Show how you would elicit, explain, concept check and teach the pronunciation of each of the three items.
Each item should be approximately the same length as the example given.
(To) influence:
T: Does anyone know the word for when something or someone has an effect on people or things?
S: Impact?
T: Close guess, very good. But the word I am looking for is the synonym to the word ‘impact’. A word that
describes the action of changing someone’s beliefs, behavior or opinion. Anyone?
S: I think I know which word you mean. We see a lot of people doing that on Instagram and Youtube.
T: On the right track! What do you call those people?
S: Influencers?
T: Bingo! So what do these influencers do?
S: They influence people?
T: Correct. Which part of speech in English does this word belong to?
S: It is a verb.
T: Correct. Anything else?
S: A noun?
T: Yes. I can say, “The influence Michelle Obama had on little girls is inspiring.” Influence, in this sentence, is
used as a noun. And, “She has influenced many young girls,” is used as a verb. Does it make sense?
S: Yes.
T: Good. Please repeat the word: influence.
C: ‘Influence’
T: How many syllables does ‘influence’ have?
S: Three syllables.
T: Correct. Please say it so the class can hear it.
S: IN-FLU-ENCE
T: Wonderful. Thank you. Class, please repeat once again.
C: IN-FLU-ENCE
T: Where is the stress; first, second, or third syllable?
S: On the first. IN-flu-ence.
T: Great. Does influence require power or capacity to sway someone?
S: Yes, it does.
T: Correct, it does. These influencers on Youtube and Instagram, how do you know they are influencing you?
S: We don’t know they are even doing it. They are nice, very friendly and provide advice.
T: Can someone give me an example of when you were influenced or influenced yourself?
S: The other day, we discussed about voting. The majority of students in our class had an ‘I voted’ sticker on
their shirt, and I didn’t vote. So, that day I ran to also vote so I didn’t feel left out.
T: That is a good example of being influenced. Anyone else? Maybe someone who has influenced someone?
S: Yes, I started talking about this book I read to my friend group. Telling them it was really good. I gave them
some reasons, showed them fanart of the book, and now they are all reading it!
T: That is an excellent example of influencing! Okay, class, say it one more time.
C: Influence.
Protest:
T: When a group of people publicly show their disapproval about something or someone, what word do we
use?
S: A demonstration?
T: That is the correct synonym. These people are holding up signs against cutting down trees in the Amazon,
and shouting in front of the White House. They are… what?
S: Oh, I know! They are protesting.
T: Correct. That is a.. what?
S: A verb.
T: Correct. What else is it?
S: A noun.
T: Correct, please explain.
S: Because it is a thing.
T: Indeed, and what word is it?
S: A protest.
T: Yes. The word is protest, please say it out loud.
