Executive Summary
The competitive environment in today’s business world poses many dangers to the
sustainability of the biosphere, which is so vital to life. Business organizations have a
responsibility to help sustain and preserve the environment for future generations.
Corporations must take initiative in developing business plans that incorporate
sustainable business practices into the strategic direction of the organization. Successful
achievement of a sustainable business plan also requires identification of barriers to
implementation and development of strategies to overcome such barriers. In addition, to
measure the success of sustainable business practices, organizations must continually
monitor the progress and communicate results of their sustainable plan efforts.
A review of the Riordan Manufacturing’s current business practices helped to illustrate
the development and implementation of a successful sustainability plan. Riordan must
concentrate on developing a plan to address unsustainable practices such as the
release of harmful emissions, improper disposal of off-spec raw materials, and the
release of harmful solvent cleaners into the biosphere. To implement these strategies
and secure the improvement of Riordan’s sustainability, the organization must anticipate
financial, social, ethical, technical, and practical barriers to these plans. Understanding
the barriers helps the organization prepare an action plan to overcome these obstacles
and ensure the successful implementation of its plans. The keys to avoiding
impediments from financial, social, ethical, and technical barriers are communication and
commitment. Communication is vital to the implementation of a successful sustainability
plan. Riordan Manufacturing must institute a comprehensive communication plan to
address the concerns of affected stakeholders. In addition, the organization must pledge
its commitment to sustainable business practices throughout the life of the corporation.
EMS Implementation and Monitoring for Riordan Manufacturing
The competitive environment in today’s business world poses many dangers to the
sustainability of the biosphere, which is so vital to life. Factors such as a growing world
population, technology, and rapid consumption of natural resources contribute
significantly to the deterioration of the planet. Business organizations have a
responsibility not only to operate under the regulations of the government but also to
exceed them and make efforts to help sustain and preserve the environment for future
, generations. In today’s competitive business environment, business entities view social
responsibility as a hindrance to achieving maximum profits. However, if current business
practices are not altered significantly, society as we know it may cease to exist.
Consumers are quickly becoming aware of the harmful effects of socially irresponsible
business practices, and strongly support organizations that make the effort to help
sustain the environment. Organizations must embrace and implement socially
responsible strategies to maintain success in today’s environmentally conscious society.
Corporations must take steps to analyze their current business practices and identify
aspects of the business that would benefit from the implementation of a sustainability
plan. Corporations must take initiative in developing business plans that incorporate
sustainable business practices into the strategic direction of the organization. To
improve sustainability, organizations should develop environmental management
systems (EMS) to help address environmental issues in a cost-effective manner. Only
after comparing the costs and benefits of incorporating sustainable business practices
against current business practices can organizations understand the importance of
adopting an environmentally sustainable business policy. Successful achievement of a
sustainable business plan also requires identification of barriers to implementation and
development of strategies to overcome such barriers. In addition, to measure the
success of sustainable business practices, organizations must continuously monitor the
progress and communicate results of their sustainable plan efforts. A review of the
Riordan Manufacturing’s current business practices will help illustrate the development
and implementation of a successful sustainability plan. According to University of
Phoenix (2011), Riordan Manufacturing is a plastic injection molding company with
locations in California, Georgia, Michigan, and China. An extensive audit of the current
business practices of each of the four plants operated by Riordan Manufacturing reveals
numerous unsustainable practices considered harmful to the environment. However, to
make the greatest improvement, Riordan must concentrate on developing a plan to
address the release of harmful emissions, improper disposal of off-spec raw materials,
and the release of harmful solvent cleaners into the biosphere. The release of harmful
emissions into the air creates air pollution that results in the deterioration of the ozone
layer, which is so vital to the biosphere. Riordan must also address the improper
management of off-spec raw materials and reduce the amount of waste sent to local
landfills. Finally, Riordan must eliminate contamination of water systems as a result of
cleaning its equipment with dangerous cleaners and mold release agents. The process
of applying solvents to the manufacturing machines and rinsing them off with water
releases hazardous waste into the water system through floor drains connected to the
