Southwest Airlines’ mission is to “Connect People to what’s important in their lives
through friendly, reliable, and low-cost air travel,” and their vision is “To be the world’s most
loved, most efficient, and most profitable airline” (Southwest Media, 2020). Southwest Airlines
is able to achieve this through the belief that employees can be inspired to go above and beyond
with a clearly communicated meaningful purpose. From the beginning it was Southwest’s
commitment to their employees that set them apart in customer service, at Southwest employees
are like family, they encourage a fun environment, often celebrate, and have a laid back work
environment based on hands-off management. Overall, they are able to demonstrate the
importance of their mission and vison statements through their company promise to employees
which is to “provide a stable work environment with equal opportunity for learning and personal
growth. Employees will be provided the same concern, respect, and caring attitude within the
organization that they are expected to share externally with every Southwest Customer”
(Southwest Airlines, 2020)
Since its founding, Southwest Airlines has been able to continuously earn a profit. In
order to maintain its continuous success within the industry, Southwest Airlines utilizes a Cost
Leadership/Low Cost Structure (Evans, 2019). Southwest Airlines has placed a large emphasis
on ensuring that its HR operations are able to successfully hire new employees that will execute
and continue to build on their abilities to deliver on their standard of above average customer
service.
Southwest Airlines utilizes an employee first strategy when it comes to organizational
culture. Founder Herb Kelleher was adamant that when an organization treats their employees
well, they will receive the same in return. According to Kelleher it was this employee first
