ENGLISH: TEXT AND COMMUNICATION 3 BA1
CHECKLIST ANZ QUESTIONS ASSIGNMENTS 2020–2021

Assignment 3: Checklist and questions discussion
1. Your chosen component should be about something you really thought about
(e.g. What went on in our heads when we were thinking about &
forming/structuring this component?) and the motivation behind certain
choices (e.g. Why did you pick that specific colour?).
2. Ensure a clear overall tripartite structure (introduction – body – conclusion).
3. Ensure well-structured paragraphs with a tripartite structure (topic sentence
– elaboration – conclusion).
4. Ensure a balance between the three crucial text sections (introduction – body
– conclusion). The body must be the largest of the three sections (at least
60% of the final text).
5. Use the template provided; do not change anything.
6. If you discuss multiple themes, keep them clearly separated in your writing,
but make sure the link between them is clear and ensure a balance between
the number of words per theme.
7. Use language economically, e.g. do not repeat yourself too often, do not
waste words, remove redundancy.
8. Use language strategically, e.g. use transition and linking words (introduction
 (within) body  conclusion).
9. Language should be aligned with your contents (e.g. ‘first’ and second’ to
introduce theme 1 and theme 2 respectively). Language use should support
the structure of the text.
10. Use language academically, accurately, meaningfully and appropriately
(vocabulary, grammar, formality (register/style), AmE  BrE).
11. Provide your references in-text (adherence APA guidelines) and at the end in
a reference list (adherence APA guidelines).  Integrity and eye for detail!
a. Provide narrative and/or parenthetical citations in your text for your
most important sources.
b. Balance references across themes.
c. Ensure 1-to-1 correspondence between in-text references and
reference list.
12. Make sure the intentions of the different text sections are clear.
a. Introduction: Make your narrowed down topic on your chosen
component and the theme(s) you will be discussing known.
b. Body: Discuss your theme(s).
c. Conclusion: Focused on the theme(s) discussed.
13. Discuss one topic per paragraph.
14. Mind the maximum number of words (450-500).
15. Only discuss one component (arrangement, colour, graphics or text).
16. Bear in mind the file-naming convention:
ETC3_2020_2021_LastName_LastName_LastName_Discussion
17. Use concrete examples where necessary, e.g. if difficult concepts are
explained.
