Discrimination against People with Intellectual Disabilities
Over the years, there has been extreme discrimination against intellectually disabled people.
Intellectually handicapped people hear very mean words from people who think they are superior
to them. Some of the challenges that these people face are discrimination when getting
employed, getting a quality education and many other challenges. Many organizations have
come up with to try and fight against this type of discrimination. However, the question that
lingers is whether enough has been done to fight against discrimination.
Statistics show that there is a great level of bullying in the world today. This is done against
all people. However, there is a higher level of discrimination against people with disability. This
occurs mainly in people with developmental disability (Inclusion Europe). For instance, in a
school setting, a person with a developmental disability may find their lunch stolen. Numbers
show that people living with intellectual disability are at 1.7 times more risk to experience
violence than people without this disability. Additionally, a third of all employers state that they
cannot employ people living with an intellectual disability because they have an assumption that
these people are unproductive. These statistics show the extreme need for care and support for
people living with a disability (Chin 21). Various institutions have come up to educate people on
the need for care and support for people living with a disability. However, there is much more
that needs to be done especially in poor communities. Governments also ought to come out and
support people living with disabilities by providing social amenities such as special education.
