Willingham's ideas on the myth of
learning styles.
Learning styles include, visual learners that are best for reading or
watching, auditory learners who are best for listening to teachers or
podcasts, kinaesthetic learners who will be best on having a hands on
experience.
Willingham argues that although learners may express a preference for the
way that they learn, when this is tested under experimental conditions, it
makes no difference to their learning.
He also observes the individuals think the learning objective is more
important than learning styles willingham also suggests that a person's
ability, background, knowledge and interests in a subject has more of an
effect on preferred learning styles.
William has stated that the idea persisted because of something called
confirmation bias. Willingham explains, when we are evaluating our beliefs,
we tend to take notice of information that supports our views and ignores
information that contracts it.
Confirmation bias is tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of
one's existing beliefs or theories.
Willingham's ideas on the importance of
meaning for learning.
meaning for learning, the idea students should understand the meaning of what
they are being taught, rather than but just being drilled information.
He recommends that teachers ensure that when they're teaching knowledge or
facts are students that they can create links between the information, rather
than just giving students a list to memorise. Willingham believes that drilling
information is damaging for students as it is boring and make some dislike
school.
Criticisms
certain things might benefit from being drilled for example times
tables and things you learn at primary school.
In general both dragon willingham's theories favour the idea of
nurture over nature as they are learning theories.
Many lecturers at universities would disagree with willingham's
views.
