Alternatives to Incarceration

CRJ 180

In this assignment I will be discussing several things. For beginners I will explain the

underlying historical and economic reasoning behind the quest to committing juveniles

to detention centers. In 2010 there was roughly about 78,000 juveniles detained. Such a

, large number for a small crowd don’t you think? There are many alternatives for

juveniles besides incarceration, I will explain those reasoning also. Lastly, I will discuss

the benefits of all alternatives besides incarceration to keep these individuals in there

own community.

with minor convictions. The underlying historical for the alternative to incarceration has

increased drastically over the course of years by thousands. The number of inmates

that were incarcerated changed from rate of 443 per 100,000 people (including prisons,

jails, immigration detention, and juvenile justice facilities) (Pete Wagner 2019).

Adolescentshave been in a jail cell from minor crimes like truancy to major things like

murder. Many states charge juveniles for things like the clothes they were to the food

they eat.Now that we haveexamined that it is time to look at the history and date behind

incarceration, we will move on to the quest for altering to incarcerating offenders in jails.

“The Us has a prison population of 2.2 according to Bureau of Justice statics. According

to data the Us is the 113th overcrowded worldwide today with the occupancy level

nationwide standing at a 103.9 percent” (Naill McCarthy 2018)

Currently there are 3 alternatives to incarceration that juvenile courts are currently

using, they are Community service, Halfway houses, and Electronic monitors. Halfway

houses are used to when offenders are at the end of their sentencing and their ready to

go back into the society. Halfway houses are usually in regular community areas and

offenders go there to finish the remaining time of their sentencing. The halfway house

is something like a rehabilitation center. They have work programs, drug and alcohol

classes and resources for mental health patients. These inmates do have to follow strict
