Judaism

Judaism is one of the ancient monolithic religions practiced among the Jews. The faith has its

tenets based on one of the first five books of the bible known as Torah. The believers of this faith

hold onto the fact that there exists a single incorporeal and eternal God. He commands His

people to have mercy and embrace justice at all times. God, the creator who deserves dignity and

respect. The following terms relate to the faith of Judaism.

Synagogue: – Among those who practice Judaism, a 'synagogue' is a holy place of

worship where people congregate to honor God (Oxtoby, Hussain, & Amore, 2014, p. 77).

People attend the synagogue not only to worship but also to receive teaching from the rabbi.

Even though the role is mainly preferred for men, some Jews favor temples where females offer

lessons.

Tefillin – The words of scripture are kept in some small boxes known as tefillin or

phylacteries (Oxtoby, Hussain, & Amore, 2014, p. 124). The attire is a piece of leather and, "is

put on the forehead and upper arm as an emblem to fulfill the commandments of Shema"

(Oxtoby, Hussain, & Amore, 2014, p. 124). During the ancient days, only men were allowed to

wear tefillin; however, modern practices even permits them among women.

Passover – Pesach, as it is known among the Hebrews, is a celebration that is used to

remember the time that the Israelites were released from bondage in Egypt (Oxtoby, Hussain, &

Amore, 2014, p. 84). People gather at a common place to commemorate the Passover during the

spring season, and it is one of the major festivals. The Jews join to partake of the Seder even as

one of the rabbis read the Haggadah aloud.

Yom Kippur – also called the Day of Atonement, this is one of the holiest days in

Judaism. The main activities of the day involve repentance and ordainment. The events

commonly fall in August or September, and it is the time when 'God opens the book of life'

(Oxtoby, Hussain, & Amore, 2014, p. 121). Every individual gets to know his/her fate for the

year on the same day.

Christianity

Christians are monotheists who believe in the existence of a single God who created the heavens

and Earth. People of the Christian faith believe in the Godhead consisting of the father, son, and

Holy Spirit. The teaching is pegged on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, with a

strong faith in life after death. The following is a discussion on a few tenets of Christianity.

Sacrament – During the early stages of Christianity developed, Christians gathered to

partake of ‘holy’ rituals that were known as the sacrament. According to Oxtoby, Hussain, &

Amore (2014), the ceremonies are 'a sign of inward and spiritual grace' (p. 156). In contemporary

society, the practice exists to demonstrate the love of the creator.

Basilica – This is a traditional catholic church in Vatican City, Rome. Christians of the Catholic

faith consider it to be one of the most sacred places in the world since St. Peter (one of the

disciples of Jesus Christ) was buried at the same place. The site acts as a pilgrimage where

Catholics around the world convene annually.
