Qualities of Correctional Leadership -Crystal
In a correctional facility effective leadership entails a variety of diverse traits. Leadership
conveys the ability to work well with coworkers, promotes camaraderie, and has no bias when
managing inmates. Specifically, to name a few of the top leadership traits that assist correctional
officers in their chosen field are good communication skills, decisiveness, resiliency, open-
mindedness, and dedication. Furthermore, communication is key in any field, however, being
capable of not only articulating verbally, but also when writing reports is important in a
correctional setting. To add, being decisive entails handling unexpected situations while deciding
in a timely matter. “Sometimes, supervisors need to correct the work-related behavior of their
subordinates along with providing positive reinforcement to motivate them.” (Allen, J. M.,
Sawhney, R. 2015). As a result of being decisive helps to build resiliency in an effective leader.
The decisions that are made will not always be the “correct” decision but having the ability to
learn from mistakes and improve in the future is vital. Correctional leaders tend to have a more
fluid and flexible mindset to adapt to changes that occur daily. By being open to new
perspectives can emphasize preparedness for dealing with new situations. Last, a good
correctional leader is dedicated, committed, and consistently leads by example, which instills the
same hardworking energy among co-workers to become good leaders in the future.
