Mood disorders have been a common discussion topic among researchers and
psychologists throughout the last several decades. Much of the research has sought to provide
insight into factors that influence the development of different mood disorders, as well as the
effectiveness of different methods of treatment. The following will discuss research-based
interventions to treat psychopathology, evaluate peer-reviewed research studies that have
provided insight into the treatment of a bipolar disorder, the conceptualization of the disorder
from a biological perspective. The discussion will also include the treatments and interventions
that have shown effectiveness and treating the disorder and the rationale behind this
effectiveness.
Overview of Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is characterized by periods of extreme depression which cycle with
periods of hypomania (Butcher, Hooley, & Mineka, 2014). The disorder is commonly attributed
to chemical imbalances in the brain that contribute to these extreme highs and lows. These
episodes are characterized by their frequency and the destructive capability they have over an
individual’s life due to the uncontrollable nature of these episodes (Bipolar disorder: Shifting
mood swings, 2002). There are four variants of the disorder: Bipolar Disorder I, Bipolar
Disorder II, Cyclothymic Disorder, and other specified bipolar and related disorders (Goldstein,
Birmaher, & Youngstrom, 2020). BPD-I is diagnoseable if an individual experienced at least
one manic episode. BPD-II is characterized by at least one occurrence of a depressive episode
and at least one hypomanic episode. Cyclothymic disorder is characterized by an individual
experiencing a minimum of a one-year cycle of extreme depressive and manic episodes. Finally,
other specified bipolar and related disorders are identifiable when some symptoms are present
