Psychopathology, also called, abnormal psychology, is the study of causes,
characteristics, and treatment of mental health disorders (Butcher, Hooley, & Mineka, 2014).
Society has sought to understand and treat mental health disorders throughout history. Several
theories exist concerning factors that impact the development of psychopathology. The causes of
these conditions can be classified into two types: ultimate and proximal (Brüne, 2015). Ultimate
factors, also known as evolutionary factors, include developmental difficulties and physiological
characteristics, as well as, including emotional and cognitive factors. Proximal causes refer to
the interaction between genetic factors and life events such as trauma (Brüne, 2015).
An individual’s culture has a deep impact on the presentation and perception of
psychopathology. Professionals must consider cultural factors when assessing, diagnosing, and
treating individuals with specific mental health conditions. Throughout history, the perception of
the causes and appropriate interventions have changed dramatically. The following will address
how culture is a determining factor in the expression of psychopathology, causes of
psychopathology from a cognitive-behavioral perspective, and changes in the perception of
psychopathology in society as a function of a historical period.
Cultural Factors in Determining the Expression of Psychopathology
While some mental health conditions exhibit similar symptoms across cultures, many do
not. For example, symptomology such as aggressive behavior, hallucinations, hostility, and self-
harm is relatively consistent across cultures for the diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia (Butcher,
Hooley, & Mineka, 2014). The expression of symptoms widely varies across different cultures
and environments. For example, Major Depressive Disorder is one of the most commonly
diagnosed disorders, but the prevalence and presentation of the disorder diverges greatly among
