The Los Angeles City Fire Department is being described as an all white boys
club by minority firefighters (“Black and Latino firefighters’ lawsuit calling LAFD ‘an
all-white boys club’ is going forward,” 2018). Several firefighters of African American
and Latino origin are alleging that there are a great number of discrimination practices
taking place within the department. These sentiments are also echoed by some of the
female firefighters as well as the men. One incident in particular that gained notoriety
was regarding a firefighter that was discriminated to the point that his job became
unbearable and he had to transfer out of his unit of assignment. His fellow fire fighters
placed feces on his clothes and equipment and used racial slurs against him in his
workplace. He was continuously harassed by his fellow firefighters and he even felt that
his life was in danger at one point. This firefighter had to eventually transfer to another
fire station for his safety (Zahniser, 2018).
The aforementioned firefighter (who was African American) had reported the acts
of discrimination committed against him to his supervisor as well as other supervisors
from other stations. Both the department policies as well as Title VII of the Civil Rights
Act of 1964 protected the reporting of his complaints. When he felt the complaints he had
reported were not being properly investigated, he reported them to even higher authorities
in the Los Angeles City Fire Department. All the while, this firefighter was being
discouraged regarding his complaints by his coworkers and supervisors. Several
individuals told him that his complaining would ruin his career and that he would be
limiting his future in the fire department. The firefighter refused to let the discrimination
go unpunished and suffered the consequences as a result (Varone, 2018).
