Answer the following questions and submit your answers before class meets to the drop
box in Moodle.
Be prepared to discuss the case in class.
Your answers should evidence you completed the assigned readings and the case study.
1.What strategy was C&C using (refer back to chapter #2)? How did you determine
this?
They have a good location. That might not be an explicit strategy in this chapter but I
know for one business that I studied in a business class had a main strategy of buying in
very specific locations. In the porter model, C&C would be using the differentiation
strategy. They can’t compete with big companies like Walmart for such low price, this
forces them to differentiate. In the Miles and Snow model, I would say that C&C is the
analyzer. They are trying to find new technology to help them be more effective.
However, they do not create or introduce any new technology into the grocery business.
2.What is the current organization structure? How effectively does it support the
strategy?
The business is a small grocery store that is getting more locations. It is organic with an
“informal style” (130) but the focus is always serving the customers. There are 4 lines of
authority.
I think it is a functional grouping or a divisional grouping (mix).pg 102 a reason that I say
divisional is that there are multiple people trying to produce a grocery store. There are
different departments. There are also different product division. For example, the
produce department consults with the produce specialist, and the meat department
consults with the meat specialist. This is also the reason that I think that it could be
functional. The meat department works in the meat section, the produce department
works with the produce people. My guess would be that cashiers are all together too.
People who do similar functions are placed together (102).
Divisional organization structures help have multiple locations, like Warner Bros (102).
However, overall the company organizational structure isn’t the most effective and
doesn’t best support the strategy. Managers feel like there is not any opportunity to learn
and grow. District store supervisors don’t bother to train them and only check things like
