Lecture 1; 25 January

Chapter 1: In command, but not in control

Supply chain dynamics
- Supply:
o Operations management
- Network:
o Organisation & management. How to collaborate?
- Dynamics:
o System dynamics simulation. Changing landscape all the time, complex. A
way of looking at the world as a series of interconnected feedback loops.
Formal simulation models to understand the dynamics

The Ideal world in the 1950s and 60s: integral control:

In reality, decision making wasn’t all that central and clearly aimed at local interest, also due
to IT impediments

, Rate of change in the environment has increased, and therefore the need to respond fast

Ashby’s law of requisite variety: an organisation needs to be as flexible as its environment

Today’s supply network reality: multiple, (semi-) independent organisational units, with
local, ad-hoc decision-making, who jointly serve final customers.
- The managerial response to the need for greater flexibility has been to fragment
these integrated chains into networks of semi-independent organisation (from super
tankers to work boats)

We need new structures and mechanisms that will assure coordination throughout the
network. Ideal situation today: multiple, independent organisation units that effectively
coordinate their actions through and joined-up decision-making.
