At the top of Maslow’s hierarchy is self-actualization. Self-actualization is a concept that comes
from the humanistic tradition approach to what motivates a person. The humanistic discipline of
psychology focuses on potential and it stresses the importance of growth and self-actualization. Self-
actualization defined by Larsen and Buss as a ‘growth based motive’ a motive to be exactly what a
person is destine to be. Maslow defines it as ‘the process of becoming more and more what one
idiosyncratically is, to become everything that one is capable of becoming’. Self-actualization is the
ability to reach the ultimate limit of a person. Maslow believe that unless a person is doing everything
they were put here to do they will never truly fulfill themselves. Maslow and Rogers both believe that all
people are good and able to reaching self-actualization. Maslow’s theory focused on the concept of
need believing that they are can be organized by a hierarchy. The basic needs and found on the lower
levels of the hierarchy and self-actualization as mentioned earlier are found on the top. There are 5
