Impact of Online Crowdsourcing on Marketing Strategy

, 2

The purpose of this paper is to identify the impact that crowdsourcing has on marketing

strategy and several other affects as well. This is a rather new idea that has gained extreme

traction and has become extremely relevant in today’s society. With the advent of the internet it

is easier than ever for a company to be directly connected to consumers and experts which have a

direct voice on their product or service. Three key items will be addressed during the course of

this paper. They are as follows, how has the organization leading the crowdsourcing utilized

consumers to help build its organization, how does this option of crowdsourcing influence

marketing strategy and lastly, what is the impact of mobile and social media campaigns on the

marketing strategy for this organization.

What is Crowdsourcing

It is important to first understand exactly what crowdsourcing is. Investopedia defines

crowdsourcing as such, “Crowdsourcing involves obtaining work, information, or opinions from

a large group of people who submit their data via the Internet, social media, and smartphone

apps. People involved in crowdsourcing sometimes work as paid freelancers, while others

perform small tasks on a voluntary basis. For example, traffic apps encourage drivers to report

accidents and other roadway incidents to provide real-time updated information to app users.”

(Hargrave, 2019)

Crowdsourcing allows a direct communication to consumers removing previous barriers

of entry that existed between a company and its consumer. In the cited example above WAZE

the traffic app now owned by google is a great example of where drivers report in real time

accidents, speed traps and optimal routes. This is an example right away that most people can

grasp their head around.
