1. The text states that "The Roman Republic from the first found itself engaged in almost
continuous warfare with its neighbors." Why do you think this was so? Was there more
the Republic could have done to foster peace? Is warfare an unavoidable result of
creating an empire?
I think that the Roman Republic found itself in continuous warfare with its neighbors for
security and territorial reasons. They fought many defensive wars, and they sought to gain their
neighbors territory to avoid being attacked. They basically wanted to secure that their neighbors
would not attack form those territories by overtaking them; therefore, allowing a less threat for
them to be attacked. The Republic could have done a lot more to foster peace.
They could have peacefully settled an agreement with the neighboring territories by
communicating rather than fighting. Also, they all could have combined together to become a
stronger force amongst other places which would have benefited them all and led to fewer
attacks amongst themselves.
When creating an empire, warfare is unavoidable because it is inevitable. I say this because
not only did the neighbors of the Roman Republic oppose a threat to them, but also the outside
civilizations did, too. Therefore, if the Roman Republic were not fighting with their neighbors to
conquer each other’s territory then another civilization would have eventually tried to overtake
them as well or vice versa.

2. In spite of unpromising beginnings, Christianity was enormously successful by the
fourth century C.E.. What difficulties did early Christians face as they sought to spread
their faith? What accounts for their success?
Early Christians faced various difficulties when they sought to spread their faith. They faced
“the opposition of the imperial government and suffered formal persecution.” This is because the
traditionally the Romans’ disliked the private association of Christianity and made the
membership in the Christian society to be a crime. The early Christians were persecuted by mobs
separating those who were faithful to the religion from the weak amongst the group.
Overcoming adversity accounts mostly for their success because remained faithful and
showed dedication and devotion to Christianity. Another thing that accounts for their success
was that Christianity eventually became the official religion of the empire.
3. According to the Gospels, was Jesus of Nazareth an actual historical figure? If so, do you
believe it is difficult to reconcile Jesus the figure in history with Jesus the "Son of God"?
Given the nature of the Biblical compilation, how reliable is the source in terms of its
justification of Jesus' actual existence?
According to the Gospels, Jesus of Nazareth was recognized as an actual historical figure. It
said that to the Gospel writers, Jesus’ resurrection was the proof of his teachings. I do not believe
it difficult to reconcile Jesus of historical figure to the Jesus of the “Son of God” because it was
his purpose to teach the people on Earth. For instance, the “Son of God,” Jesus, was said to have
been brought upon this Earth to “bring immortality to those who believed in him and followed
