NURS 6052 Week 4

Post your PICO(T) question, the search terms used, and the names of at least two
databases used for your PICO(T) question. Then, describe your search results in terms of
the number of articles returned on original research and how this changed as you added
search terms using your Boolean operators. Finally, explain strategies you might make to
increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search on your PICO(T) question. Be
specific and provide examples.

PICO(T): In individuals diagnosed with depression, how does psychotherapy compare with

antidepressant therapy for the treatment of depression?

The databases searched were CINAHL, Walden Library, and Pubmed. I narrowed the search to

peer reviewed articles and changed the dates so they ranged from 2014 to 2019 to show the most

recent articles in evidence-based practice. When I add my filters and search the terms

“depression psychotherapy antidepressant” in the Walden Library, I get 152 results. Walden

Library (2019), recommends using Boolean terms to create a more precise search with more

relevant results (para. 1). I added the Boolean terms to my next search and got 75,734 results. A

study concluded that it is essential to search at least three different databases to achieve

approximately 90% of all relevant literature on the subject (Ho et al., 2016). A strategy to

increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search is to use alternative terms. I can try

searching alternative words such as “cognitive behavior therapy”, “depression treatment”, or

“depression medication” to improve my results. On PubMed, I used the advanced search filters

to narrow my search. I clicked to view articles only studied humans and were published within 5

years. Another strategy is to utilize a feature on PubMed called Clinical Inquiries. Clinical

Inquiries is designed to improve search results by “linking the type of question (therapy,

diagnosis, etiology, and prognosis) to a stored search strategy that retrieves the appropriate
