The field of nursing continues to change and continues to demonstrate the importance of
nursing role/involvement plays in the care of the patient. This goes beyond the bedside and
healthcare design and policymaking. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) in collaboration with The
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJW) reported in 2010 on the importance of the Future of
Nursing. In this report, the importance that the nursing field plays in the transformation of
healthcare is pointed out. The reason that this is important is that nurses play a vital role in the
continuity of care, a significant part of the Accountable Care Organization (ACO) as active
participants, medical and nurse-managed clinics. Because of the need and extension of nursing
out to the community and leadership roles, nursing is expected to grow, or rather branch out,
outwards as demanded from the community. In current times, one can see that the needs for
nurses working in hospital settings is slowly decreasing; however, the community nurses are in
greater needs, due to the fact of healthcare reform shifting the way care is delivered. The reason
this can be seen is that the healthcare mentality has shifted from treating illnesses and is now
focusing on early identification (screening), prevention for those at high risk, and
prevention/management of chronic conditions in an outpatient setting.
According to the American Nurses Association (n.d.) the ACO pertains to hospitals
creating an interdisciplinary team to work together in reducing cost and improving health.
Hospitals such as Kaiser Foundation, are advocates of such goals, which utilizes home health,
preventative, and other nurse-managed health clinics with the best way possible (KP, 2018). The
ACO, purpose is to improve healthcare as a whole and work with all facilities to hold everyone
