Implicit Prejudice
The Implicit Association Test (IAT) measures the strength of associations between
evaluations and concepts (Harvard, n.d.). Within the quiz that I had taken it measured preference
between African Americans and European Americans, it was under Race IAT.The IAT was
created to have a broad understanding of implicit cognition. Implicit cognition uses thoughts,
actions, morale, awareness, and stereotypes. On the website, there was a variety of tests that one
can take. There were many tests that can be taken to measure beliefs and attitudes towards
stereotypes like the Race IAT.
The Implicit Association Test (IAT) that I had taken was Race, Black-White IAT. Within
this test, it was designed to determine any preference of African Americans and European
Americans. Within the test, there were images of those with a lighter facial complexion and
those with a darker facial complexion. After taking the IAT, my results suggested no automatic
preference between African Americans and European Americans. While growing up, my
neighborhood was diverse, so I was able to communication with others who did look like me and
to those who did not. My parents taught to always show respect to others, so I never had an issue.
Overall, my results did actually surprise me just a bit. I usually have had negative
encounters with those who are European Americans so during the IAT when it asked me who
was more of my preference, I chose African Americans. Although, while growing up when my
parents did tell me to show respect to everyone I would, but there would be so many who would
not show it back.Although my neighborhood was diverse, there were always more people of
color so that is what I am used to growing up. I am glad that my preference is balanced and not
one over the other, but I know this test does not result in a definitive assessment of my implicit
preference.
