Reflection: Personal Finance Basics
Based on the objectives and resources from this week’s assignments I feel the thing I
learned is that there is a lot more to personal finance and financial literacy than I may have
realized. I have often thought of myself as financially sound, however after reading this week’s
resources, I realized I still have a lot to learn. I do well with my regular finances but could stand
to learn more about investing and long-term financial success.
I plan to use some of the various money saving ideas from the discussion board posts that
I read from my classmates and try to implement them in my life. I have never done the minus
one approach. I also go through phases of impulse buying and have a bit of buyer’s remorse
afterwards. I am trying to be more self-aware and really think about if it’s something I need or
truly want before buying it.
I feel I need to grow most in my ability to not impulse buy. I also tend to “compete” with
my husband. If he buys something, I feel as though I need to buy something to match. Even
when what he is buying is tools or things for around the house, I feel like I need something. It
causes me to spend more money on things that I don’t need.
I have been working in healthcare for the last 15 years and my degree/program of study is
to enhance that. I believe there will always be a need for healthcare, so I feel my job security is
relatively high and thus security in salary. I feel that there are areas in my personal life that I can
work to ensure better financial security, such as working on being able to live on either my
