Key questions and trends in development
What is global development for you?
Development, politics, diffusion, practices, economy, security are a few words which come
up when one is asked about the definition of global development.
World population shifting to the ‘East’ and Africa
The country is bigger on the map when it has a greater number in population. There is a
clear shift in the world to the East (from a western perspective) and Africa, where the
population size is increasing rapidly.
Are we getting more prosperous?
The world as a whole has become prosperous, however the distribution of wealth has not
been fair. A small group and people of countries have the most wealth, which results in a
gap.
Looking back in history
Enlightenment and Industrialization
Enlightenment is a philosophical and historical development where many European
countries started thinking in a rational manner based on separation of powers, e.g. the role
of religion decreased.Industrialization refers to the enhancement of more services,
infrastructure.
Colonialism - Imperialism
Many developing countries have been former colonies. The African continent has many
borders that were cut by European powers and separation ethnic groups. The impact of
colonial rule and slavery and extracion of resources has until this day a major impact.
