Most of us take our health and bodies for granted. One of the basic requirements that
are crucial to ensure survival, is eating, and for some this can be very difficult and
disordered. There are many reason and factors that could contribute to an individual
developing an eating disorder. An eating disorder can be described as the persistent
disturbance in eating and the behaviours that accompany them, as it can cause
significant impairments in both bodily and psychological health (Barlow et al., 2017).
Introduction
The eating disorders that will be focussed on in this discussion is Anorexia Nervosa,
Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge-eating disorders. This discussion will differentiate and
provide in-depth understanding of each of the eating disorders, focussing on the
hallmark features and diagnostic criteria listed in the DSM-5 of the American
Psychological Association (APA). Secondly, this discussion will critically discuss how
South African black females are no longer perceived to be ‘immune’ from eating
disorders. This will be done by discussing the developmental stage issues related to
adolescents and university students; discussing the impact of the media on
acculturation to Western ideas; discussing the impact of urbanisation, economic factors,
and the differences experienced in rural areas. Furthermore this discussion will focus on
