NR_447 Week 6 Discussion Question, Civility in the Workplace
Week 6: Civility in the Workplace Reflect on what you observed in the video as you answer the following: 1. Based on what you observed, what leadership skills should you, as Masaya’s preceptor, model for your fellow coworkers to promote his acceptance into the work-group or team. 2. Does incivility seem to be an issue in the scenario? 3. Describe any common themes you discovered among the article, the video and the Civility Index 4. Share how you may improve your score on the index based on what you have read. As Masaya’s preceptor the leadership skill’s I would model to ensure acceptance into the work-team include positive open communication, with feedback, responsibility, and accommodation. Supporting our colleges in a new work environment is crucial to ensure patient safety, confidence and reliability of your new co-worker and ensure knowledge of practice and principles. At my place of employment our new peers receive a welcome packet, get introduced to our peers and have 12 weeks to become accustomed to the routine. As a new grad RN, I had the pleasure of being in a residency program which enabled myself to pick a mentor to guide me the first years of my contract. Incivility seems to play a big factor in the above scenario as Lachman states, “Incivility, bullying, and horizontal/lateral violence are examples of workplace mistreatment that injure individual nurses and the ethical climate of the organization” (p. 41). Finkelman states coping mechanisms for incivility as, “to clarify expectations, particularly those related to assignments” (p. 231-232). Regarding the above scenario; Massaya and his preceptor Alicia, it was important for Alicia to be empathetic with Massaya, validate his correct actions and provide a plan for discussing with the healthcare team alternatives/compromises to implement regarding communication. This is done by Alicia when she states, “I have seen great progress since you started working here”. Because Massassay is of a different background (Filipino) the staff should be educated on the different culture and respect his culture as he has done with his new team. Common themes seen in the required material include effective communication and respect regarding differing cultures, ethnicities and races. An article published in “Managing People at Work” writes, “Promote civility and respect. By doing so, you will engender not only loyalty and hard work, but also an enviable culture” (p. 4). Working in a harmonious and peaceful environment allows for creativity, effective collaborating and a healing culture for the patients. Personal growth and improvement regarding my score on the Clark Workplace Civility Index assessment would be geared towards internal though, instincts and practice. A great example of this includes perceptions of situations, people or patients. Often times with such diversity being aware of your own beliefs and setting them aside to respect your patients becomes overwhelming. It’s crucial as a healthcare provider to be aware of this “invisible line” and not to cross it. Ahlrichs, K. (2018). Go beyond harassment best practices: Add respect to your workplace culture.
