NR351 Week 2 Discussion 1, Inter-professional Collaboration Strategies In today's changing healthcare environment, it is more important than ever for professional nurses to be skilled in collaborating with professionals from other healthcare disciplines. What communication strategies can professional nurses use to specifically promote collaboration with other healthcare disciplines and professionals? --- Deborah Augustyniak Yesterday Jan 6 at 11:09pm Manage Discussion Entry Class, you may begin posting in this discussion on Sunday, January 7, 2018, which is Preview Day for Week 2. Collaboration among different healthcare professions is important in providing quality patient-centered care. The term interprofessional has largely replaced the term interdisciplinary, although you may see both terms used. Massachusetts Department of Higher Education Nursing Initiative (2016) stated that understanding “the impact of the effective collegial communication on patient outcomes” (p. 39) is essential in professional nursing. While we sometimes collaborate with patients and their families in planning nursing care (Hood, 2014), in this week’s discussion we are considering collaboration between and among different healthcare professions (or disciplines). Since nurses are coordinators of care (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2016), we need to become experts in the use of communication strategies that enhance and promote interprofessional collaboration. Class, please return to the original assigned discussion topic above. Clearly and thoroughly address the assigned question. Remember to use your assigned readings or the Week 2 online lesson PLUS a scholarly outside source to support your statements. APA format for citations and references is strongly encouraged. Retrieved from ----- In today's changing healthcare environment, it is more important than ever for professional nurses to be skilled in collaborating with professionals from other healthcare disciplines. What communication strategies can professional nurses use to specifically promote collaboration with other healthcare disciplines and professionals? Response 1: Communication is defined as the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs. Some strategies that nurses can use to promote collaboration with other healthcare disciplines and professionals are self-development strategies, negotiating respectfully, managing conflict wisely, avoiding negative behaviors, understanding the perspective of others, developing emotional maturity (Lindeke 2005). To have good and effective collaboration between healthcare disciplines there must be good communication. Along with effective communication there must be a certain level of professionalism and respect for other disciplines and point of views. In collaboration in the health care field we can not forget that we must have excellent communication not only with health care team but also with our patients and families. Also, we need to be effective listeners just as much as communicators. Collaboration can improve patient care and create a satisfying work environment. I work as a hospice admission nurse and must collaborate with hospital staff from the unit secretary, floor nurse, case manager, and the hospital physician to coordinate the care and transition the patient to our care. This a very difficult time for patients and their loved one and without good communication and collaboration our patients wouldn’t get the quality of care that they deserve. There’s a chance if we as health care professional fall short on our end to effectively communication or collaborate the patient could have a lose trust in our abilities to care for them.
