Gewoonlijk wordt een computerproduct via de stekker op aarde aangesloten. Grote apparatuur zoals
serverracks waarin netwerkapparaten zijn ondergebracht, moeten ook worden geaard.
Elektrostatische ontlading (ESD) kan optreden wanneer er een elektrische lading (statische
elektriciteit) is opgebouwd op een oppervlak dat in contact komt met een ander, anders geladen
oppervlak. ESD kan schade aan computerapparatuur veroorzaken als deze niet correct wordt
ontladen.
Er moet ten minste 3.000 volt statische elektriciteit worden opgebouwd voordat iemand ESD kan
voelen.
Minder dan 30 volt statische elektriciteit kan een computeronderdeel beschadigen.
Bewaar alle componenten in antistatische zakken totdat u klaar bent om ze te installeren.
Gebruik geaarde matten op werkbanken.
Gebruik geaarde vloermatten in werkruimtes.
Gebruik antistatische polsbanden wanneer u in computers werkt.
Elektriciteit uit stopcontacten wordt geleverd in wisselstroom (AC). Alle componenten in een
computer hebben echter gelijkstroom (DC) nodig. Om gelijkstroom te verkrijgen, gebruiken
computers een voeding om wisselstroom om te zetten in gelijkstroom met een lagere spanning.
Advanced Technology (AT) - Dit is de originele voeding voor verouderde computersystemen die nu
als verouderd worden beschouwd.
AT Extended (ATX) - Dit is de bijgewerkte versie van de AT, maar wordt nog steeds als verouderd
beschouwd.
ATX12V - Dit is de meest voorkomende voeding die momenteel op de markt is. Het bevat een
tweede moederbordconnector om de CPU van stroom te voorzien. Er zijn verschillende versies van
ATX12V beschikbaar.
EPS12V - Dit was oorspronkelijk ontworpen voor netwerkservers, maar wordt nu algemeen gebruikt
in geavanceerde desktopmodellen.
