THESE ARE THE WELL DESCRIBED NOTES OF CHAPTER MEMORY AND DATA STORAGE OF COMPUTER SCIENCE (2210) THESE NOTES HAS A BETTER WELL UNDERSTADING OF EVERY TERMS. ITS THE BEST NOTES FOR CHAPTER 6
MIDI – Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It associates with
the storage of music files but MIDI files are not music and don’t
conntain any sounds. It allows electronic musical instruments to
interact with each other. The MIDI protocal uses 8-bit serial
transmission with one stop and start bit (asynchronous). MIDI
files takes up lots of memory.
Velocity byte– Identifies pressure/ how loud a keynote is/
string should be played.
Pitch byte– Tells the MIDI device which note to play.
asynchronous– Not existing and happening at the same time.
serial transmission– Sending data using 1 wire, better for long
distances.
File compression- The reduction of the file size, there are 2
types of file compression: lossy (loses data) and lossless (doesn’t
lose data).
MPEG-3 (MP3)– MP3 uses audio compression technology to
reduce the size of the audio file (from MIDI) by approximately
90%. This can be done by using the file compression software
while tranferring audio files from a CD to an MP3 file. It
removes sounds that human ear can’t hear properly so it
doesn’t affect the quality too much.
MPEG-4 (MP4)- This file format is different from MP3, it allows
more than sound to be recorded (photos, videos and animation
can be stored as this file format). Videos stored in this format
will not lose quality when uploaded or streamed over the
internet.
, JPG- Joint Photographic Experts Group, it is an example of a
lossy file compression.
The difference between lossless and lossy file compression
