De titel van het boek is: On the Beach. Dit komt doordat Mary en Peter op een mooie plek bij
het strand wonen. Dwight en Moira vinden het geweldig om daar bij het strand te zeilen. Als
onderzeeër kijk je ook altijd naar de stranden en de kust. Iedereen weet
dat ze binnenkort dood gaan. Veel mensen gaan daardoor naar het
strand. Op het strand kunnen ze genieten van de laatste momenten van
hun leven. Het strand hier dus symbool voor het einde van het leven. In
het boek zelf komt het ook meerdere keren voor dat het verhaal zich
afspeelt op het strand.
