Syllabus Type:
Multi-syllabus: Skills & Topic based
In Skills Based - The student will concentrate on activities where speaking,
listening and writing is important , such as applying for a job or going for an
interview , as well as a focus on how to pronounce certain words that could be
useful in the workplace.
In Topic Based - The student will concentrate on activities that are based on their
interests, such as listening to authentic piece on technology and having a casual
conversation with the teacher on various topics that are common. A topic-based
syllabus is immediately associated with vocabulary and in this lesson, I chose to
focus on nouns used in the workplace.

Course Aims:
By the end of the course, the student will:

● Have improved his business spoken English that is usually used in the
workplace, and will sound much more sophisticated and professional when
going to job interviews and meetings.
● Be better able to listen to and grasp speech in audio through various
listening activities and be able to pick up certain information from listening
pieces.
● Have improved his spoken English to use in casual conversation with
friends and co-workers. He will be able to use his skills when traveling to
English speaking countries.
● Have improved his fluency and pronunciation of English words typically
associated within corporate settings and socializing with friends.

Course Rationale: (700 – 1000 words)

I have decided to divide this lesson into two syllabus types, (a) Skills based (b)
Topic based.

(A) Skills Based - Focuses on practising one or many of the main skills such
as reading, writing, listening and speaking. Helping students improve their
abilities in that area by teaching them strategies. The student will focus on
activities where speaking, listening, reading and writing is important, such
as applying for a job or going for a job interview and sitting in a meeting.
(B) Topic Based - This syllabus is based on the fact that it is the learner who
does the learning - the teacher’s role is to help with the learning process.
Topic based will help create a stimulating environment for the student which

, will help remove the roadblocks to help create a successful lesson.

I have decided to use a multi-syllabus because:
1) Using a skills-based syllabus will ensure that the
abilities that the student requires will be taught to him.
This will help him to achieve everything he needs to
have in order to find a job, listen to English, and
converse with his English-speaking friends.
2) By also using a topic-based syllabus it will help the
student to become interested in the lessons, as the
lessons will be based on topics that he is interested in.
this will make it a lot easier for the students to
concentrate and learn, plus it will help to make the
lesson a lot more successful.

Hour 1:

I have chosen to cover the topic of climate change because Antonio is interested
in the environment, so getting him to converse about something which he is
interested in will be a lot easier than getting him to converse about something
which is of no interest to him. This topic will help him to engage in conversation,
which will allow him to practice naturally speaking and listening to others, as well
as increase his vocabulary within the topic.

Hour 2:

I have chosen the topic of employment and workplace life here because my
student would like to eventually find a job, while using his new and improved
English. By being able to follow instructions given to him in a work environment it
will be a lot easier for him to work. If he is able to understand what the instructions
from his manager or supervisor are, he will be better able to complete his work
properly. Practising the skill of following instructions is important for day to day life
as well.

Hour 3:

Current affairs are a topic that my student has said he is interested in; therefore, I
came up with a lesson which focusses on local news from his country. This will
pique his interest as it is a news article about his own country and is also part of
what is currently happening in the world. This will also help him to practise using
new vocabulary which is used to discuss news and current affairs with friends and
co-workers. It will also him to practice retelling important bits from stories which
interested him.

Hour 4:

My student is interested in the field of science; therefore, I have chosen to cover
the topic of Albert Einstein as this should interest Antonio. It will also give him the
opportunity to practice his listening skills which is something he wished to improve
