NURS 4685: Capstone Course
Capstone Synthesis Paper
I started the RN-BSN program in Fall 2017 and took 1-2 courses at a time depending on my workload. I did my best to take classes at each start date but the only time I was unable to do so was when I was preparing to deliver my two baby boys. When I look back through the program, it did take me about three years to complete the program due to the required prerequisites but I have no regrets. My first class was Medical Terminology (NURS 3309) which
I think was a good way to start the program but I was a bit shocked being that this was the only nursing course I received a B in. I did complete some prerequisites at my local community college whose courses run on different dates from UTA. Before the RN-BSN program
Before starting this program, I was having difficulty finding a job in the acute care setting
and made sure to start BSN courses as soon as possible so that it would make me a more suitable job candidate. I was fortunate to land a job in February 2018 on a medical/surgical unit and am currently still working on the same floor. As a new grad nurse on the floor, I was more 2
concerned with proving myself to my colleagues and becoming more competent as a floor nurse. I found it difficult working the night shift and was not involved in any roles or was not a member
of any council. My attitude shifted when I started the Transition to Professional Nursing course (NURS 3345). This course opened my eyes and motivated me to become more involved as we were introduced to nursing theories, ethics, decision making, and critical thinking/knowledge. I have become more involved being that I have taken on the role as charge nurse and preceptor. I am a current member of the unit practice council on my floor whose goal is to improve clinical practice, processes, and outcomes. The BSN program has given me the skills needed to read, analyze, and use research articles that has helped benefit me as a professional nurse. I have also become more confident in communicating with the MDs on questioning/clarifying certain orders that I don’t understand of what their expected outcomes would be. I do work at a teaching hospital and noticed that the surgical residents are open to questions, love to teach, and explain their rationales. This has improved my critical thinking skills immensely thanks to our lovely health care team. Lifelong Learning
The BSN program has helped me gain a great amount of knowledge and has given me the
tools needed to further my studies. The Health Policy and Legal Aspect course (NURS 3375) was an eye opener and gave numerous examples on how not following protocols and poor judgement could lead to major consequences. When you are aware of potential consequences, it serves as a reminder to take your practice serious when caring for patients. As healthcare professionals, we are held accountable for our actions in and outside of work. After taking RN-
BSN Nursing Management (NURS 4455), I have come to a better understanding of the amount of responsibility nurse managers have. I have realized that our manager is under a lot of stress
