POMPEII AND HERCULANEUM
● The geographical setting and natural features of Campania
GEOGRAPHICAL CONTEXT

Pliny the Elder
Campania – “ … a region blessed by fortune, where the gods
of wine and grain had fought for the supremacy of their crop,
that the area was ‘famed throughout the world for its wine,
‘famed beyond any other for their shellfish and fine fish. The
Campanian olives produced more oil than olives grown
Elsewhere.

Then indeed there is that wonderful and life-sustaining and healthy atmosphere that lasts all the year
through, embracing a climate so mild … Campania has a wealth of different kinds of forest … an abundance
of corn, vines and olives, splendid fleeces produced by its sheep, fine-necked bulls, numerous lakes, rich
sources of rivers and springs that flow over the whole region. Its many seas and harbours, and the bosom of
its lands are open to commerce. While even the land runs eagerly out into the sea as if to assist mankind.
