Book report 1
Divergent - Veronica Roth

Summary
In the futuristic Chicago lives a society, a society that believes that they’re the only survivors
of the wars. In this city, people are divided into factions: Abnegation, Erudite, Amity, Candor
and Dauntless. The people wear clothing in their faction’s colours, eat food that’s from their
faction and live in the area of their faction compound. In Abnegation are they selfless, in
Erudite intellectual, in Amity peaceful, in Candor honest and in Dauntless brave.
When children reach the age of 16, they have to choose their faction, based on a test with a
serum. The serum makes sure you come in a kind of simulation.

Beatrice Prior is 16 years old and born in Abnegation. Her father, Andrew Prior, is one of the
Abnegation leaders. Beatrice and her brother Caleb have to take the test, which says in what
faction you belong, according to the choices you make during the simulation. Beatrice is
brought in a simulation by Tori Wu, a Dauntless woman. The test is supposed to result in
one faction, but Beatrice fits in three different factions: Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless.
Tori tells her that she’s Divergent and that if she tells anyone, the faction leaders will kill her,
because they think Divergents are dangerous for the society; they think differently.
The next day is the Choosing Ceremony. Caleb chooses Erudite, which their father
absolutely dislikes, and Tris chooses Dauntless.
Beatrice and the other initiates run to the train that brings them to the Dauntless compound.
In the train she meets Christina, a girl from Candor. Together they jump out of the train on
the roof of the Dauntless compound, as the first dedication of the initiation. Eric, one of the
Dauntless leaders, asks for a volunteer to jump first in an enormous gap, somewhere on the
other side of the roof. Surprisingly Beatrice volunteers, and she lands in a net, where her
new instructor Four waits for them. When Four asks her name she decides to pick a new
one: Tris.
The 18-years old Eric and Four tell the group initiates about the initiation that lies ahead for
them. It is a lot harder than the years before, because not everyone will be accepted; the
ones that ends on the bottom of the leaderboard will become factionless. It’s more like a
competition now, that makes that everyone is really upset and stuff but Eric doesn’t care.

The first stage of the initiation is learning how to deal with knives and guns, and how to fight.
This is incredibly hard for Tris, but Four decides to help her. During the initiation she
befriends not just Christina, but also Will and Al. But she has also a few enemies: Peter,
Drew and Molly. Peter is a pathetic boy that is so desperate that he stabs Edward in his eye,
because he stood first on the leaderboard. Edward couldn’t participate anymore and after all
he became factionless.
Tris ends in the 6th place. Her friend Al doesn’t that well during the trainings, so probably
he’s not going to make it.
