PHI 103: Informal Logic
This has been a crazy year. What can all be said about 2020? Well, let’s start with COVID-19;
everyone is well aware of the mask-wearing, quarantine pandemic that has hit the United States
, hard. But, we also had the Presidential election, and on most of our ballots, we had the option to
vote to legalize recreational and medical marijuana. Which some states already have. This is a
touchy subject, some for some. But why? What does using marijuana hurt? I will use this paper
to show the most useful information possible. I will use the premise and conclude my discussion
with different sources used.
Presentation of an Argument that Marijuana Use is Safe
Marijuana is an ancient drug going back to Egyptian pharaohs. The value of marijuana was
promoted for the healing powers and anti-inflammatory properties. According to the American
Health Journal (Shereif Rezkalla and Robert A. Kloner, 2014), marijuana plays an essential role
in many people, such as glaucoma, HIV, and multiple sclerosis name a few. There is clinical
evidence supporting marijuana, so many countries and twenty individual states have legalized
marijuana for medical purposes. This study shows that medical marijuana is excellent for
patients suffering from chronic, debilitating pain (J Am Acad Dermatol, 2008).
The primary argument is listed below:
Premise 1: The use of medical marijuana has fewer side effects than long term
medication
Premise 2: Marijuana is far less addictive than pain medication, and alcohol and users are
less prone to overuse.
Premise 3: There has never been one death related to the use of ONLY marijuana.
Premise 4: Jails would not be overcrowded due to marijuana-related offenses.
