Research Methods in Criminal Justice: CRJ 520
In this paper I will first identify three of the most salient aspects of the ten distinguishing
characteristics of qualitative writing. The next thing I will talk about is going to be why these
aspects were selected. The third I will describe how the selected aspects relate to the evaluation
, and interpretation of criminal justice data and research findings. Then lastly, I will explain why
researchers would consider qualitative methods an artistic expression of formalized
methodology.
The three most salient or important aspects of the then distinguishing characteristics of
qualitative writings are Naturalistic Inquiry, Dynamic System, and Empathic neutrality. The first
thing I will do is give a brief explanation of these characteristics. The first one being Naturalistic
inquiry which I think is extremely important because it allows the researchers to study a group in
their natural setting and to get a inside look of groups of people that are true to the
core(Writing@CSU 2021). The second characteristicI found important was Dynamic systems
which means that when conducting qualitativeresearch, you might not find straightforward
answers or something that is right or wrong or clear and cut. This allows for you to conduct
research and use a wide variety of subjects to interview and get an extremely broad range of
information to use in assisting with your research and see how using different people would
change your study. (Writing@CSU 2021). The last characteristic I found most important was
Empathic neutrality which allows a research to be non-judgmental when compiling findings and
allows the researcher to be as neutral as possible for the purpose of the research (Writing@CSU
2021).
The second part of this paper I will discuss why I believe these characteristics are the
most important in my opinion. The first characteristic being Naturalistic inquiry which allows for
a group to be observed in their environment to me is extremely important. The reason I find this
important because if the group is in there setting or home territory then I believe you would get
the most honest and actual results. I think this because if you have a group of people and you
leave them in their element and you go to them and study them you are going to see how they
