Introduction

The primary purpose of this lab is to show how an oil spill can affect our ocean, wildlife,

and the ecosystem. But it is not only large oil spills that impact our oceans. It can be small things

such a leak in a tanker or the why they drilled a hole into the ocean floor. Scientists are looking

at three different ways to help to break down the oil spill so that it is not as hazardous to our

oceans. One of the methods is to use Microbes. “Microbes are a group of bacteria trawled from

the depths of the Challenger Deep can not only survive its extreme conditions but also chomp on

hydrocarbon molecules found in everyday crude oil and natural gas.” (Woodward 2019)

Objective:

The objective of this lab is to show us how breaking down petroleum is a complex

process. In this lab, we are going to be showing how the bioremediation of an ocean oil spill that

is being consumed by microorganisms. We will be using two chemicals to do this one is Rid-X;

this is being used to show the breakdown of the microorganisms. The second chemical is

tetrazolium; this one is going to show us the breakdown of the oil.

Hypotheses:

I would think that if you are pouring the tetrazolium into both tubes 1 and 2 that they are

both going to change color. In tubes 3 and 4, I feel that you will be able to see the breakdown of

the oil in tube four because that is the one with the microbial solution in it. Tubes 5 I will be

putting this tube into a different light then the other tubes to see if this will make the content

change faster or slower. Putting this in a more durable light will break down the oil more

quickly. Tube number 6 is going to be put into a differenttemperature than the rest of the tubes;

this, I feel, is going to slow down the process of breaking down the oil in the tube.
