MANDATED REPORTING
Mandating Reporting of Child Abuse
HUM 5300 Human Services Delivery Skills & Processes
There are some serious issues when it comes to mandating reporting of child abuse. One
central problem is not following up with the reports. With an increase in cases, it is hard to keep up with
every case reported. It is such an issue that it has resorted to many children's deaths because a report was
made, one house visit was made but never followed up thoroughly. Not enough workers to help every

single child that falls victim to abuse, neglect, or maltreatment. For the final paper, I will discuss
mandated reporting and increased cases of abuse and neglect that affect and follow up that have resorted
to the death of a child. Also, increased casework for workers involves investigation and case
management. Also, I will provide information on what I know about mandating reporting and the issue of
mismanaged cases that should have been followed up, and increased cases are affecting the investigation
and management aspect of cases. The topic of mandated reporting of child abuse is vital to our children
and should be global.
I have become very passionate about the topic of child abuse and neglect. Children in foster care
are without foster homes, and group homes are becoming overflown with unadoptable children due to
increased abuse and neglect cases. It has become a serious issue and has led to other surrounding
problems in child abuse and neglect. Children who become part of the system are at high risk of
becoming involved in drugs, gangs, prostitution, and the worst, sex trafficking. Professionals in any
setting are considered mandated reporters, by law, and by code of ethics, are required to report that a child
is being abused or neglected; if we fail to do so, it is considered breaking the law. Mandated reporting has
some issues in its policy, which has failed children in the past. Gabrielle Fernandez and Anthony Avalos
are just two of many cases where mandated reporting failed them due to issues with the current policies.
As of the year 2017, according to the Child Maltreatment Report, 3.5 million children are reported
674,000 were found to be victims of abuse or neglect, 74.9 of the victims are neglected, 18.3 are
physically abused, and 8.6 are sexually abused. The fact is there is an extreme amount of cases, those
cases where a mandated reporter did their job. Then nothing was done for the child. The serious issue is
severe case overload. some cases get called in, and are falsely reported, which are just a few of the severe
problems in CPS that causes serious issues to get pushed under the rug. Gabrielle Fernandez and Anthony
Avalos are two boys who had mandated reporters, report abuse, and, in the end, resulted in the two boys'
death. Gabrielle's teacher, a security guard at the local welfare office, mandated reporters to do their job
and reported the abuse due to what they had seen on the child. The bruises and scars. Child Protective
Services (CPS) went to the home on several occasions, and yet the child still resigned in the abusive
