Case Study: City Center Hospital

City Center Hospital is a large outpatient surgery center located in Kansas, has been making

changes to its organization to become more profitable and patient-centered. While these changes

are being implemented, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Director of Nursing

(DON), and Human Resource (HR) Manager noticed the moral of the nurses are at an all-time

low, and there are relationship issues between doctors, unit managers, and nurses. With these

concerns in mind, an Organizational Development (OD) Consultant has been hired to help all

internal managers develop a common focus of leading a united team. The OD Consultant will

have to assist the leadership team in developing more vital leadership skills via a one-day

workshop. The OD Consultant will need to follow the action research process of The Planning

Phase, The Doing Phase, and the Checking Phase and understand what is required.

Action Research

Action Research “is a recurring, collaborative effort between organization members and OD

consultants to use data to resolve problems” (Bierema,2020). What this means is that an OD

Consultant needs to research and collect the required data, analysis the data, and provide a

resolution for the issue-based on the research that was performed. In the case of City Center

Hospital, we need to understand what the gap is. Based on the information that was provided

when the OD Consultant was hired, a plan needs to be developed to increase morale and to

improve the communication and teamwork problems between the nurses, doctors, and unit

managers; once a project has been agreed upon, then a one-day workshop will be scheduled to go

over the issue and how to correct the problem, and then checking phase will begin.
