As educators, determining the best method to address behavior in children ages four to five

can become questionable. The methods vary based on what the educator feel is appropriate.

Some may have the children sit next to them in the lunchroom or even take their daily task

privilege away. More incriminating, some turn to abuse. Nevertheless, abusing the children

should never be an option despite their behavior, but what about taking away their recess?

Children enjoy free play. Thisperiod is the time they get to relax and socialize with their peers

on a more personal level. They are also granted the opportunity to engage in physical activities.

Many schools have taken away recess to promote a more academic curriculum. According to the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (n.d.), “recess benefits students by increasing their

level of physical activity, improving their memory, attention, and concentration, helping them

stay on-task in the classroom, reducing disruptive behavior in the classroom, and improving their

social and emotional development” (CDC, n.d.). If recess is beneficial forthe children’s

development, why do teachers use it as a disciplinary method? This research aims to focus on

the importance of recess in school and discover alternative methods beneficial for optimal

growth.


Purpose and Educational Significance

Playing build a child’s content knowledge, creativity, and executive functioning skills. It is their

job; it is their livelihood. Play forms the basis for the developmental aspects of a child’s learning

process. To name a few, playing helps children set goals, develop and share ideas, pretend,

create, imagine, and negotiate. When students are physically and socially active with their peers,

they are delighted, and it shows through their smiles and laughter. They are learning how to

socialize positively while at the same time expressing their uniqueness. According to Kenneth
