Having worked in hospice for a year, I have learned a lot about patient’s wants and needs in the

last weeks of their lives. I have come to respect their wishes and have provided them with

whatever they may need with the help of my supervisors. In this specific scenario, I would

definitely try to help Mr. Newcomb help get in touch with his mistress as he wished, however, as

much as I would like to, I would not be able to lie to Mrs. Newcomb and tell her that her

husband will be busy. One lie may lead to many lies and it would not be appropriate for myself,

as a professional nurse to lie. I will help Mr. Newcomb in calling, or even setting up a meeting

with his mistress but the responsibility of how to have Mrs. Newcomb be away, unfortunately,

will have to be on him.

Application of Patient Principles –

Beneficence in nursing means to be kind and be able to benefit others (Burke, 2020). I have

applied the ethical principal of beneficence by accepting to help him meet his mistress. I know

that this would be a kind gesture and would be something he will cherish in his last days of life.

Non-maleficence means that nurses must not do any harm to their patients (Burke, 2020). They

must protect their patients from anything that may harm them physically and emotionally. In this

scenario, the ethical principle of non-maleficence is used for Mr. Newcomb and his wife. By not
