Task 2: Workforce Planning, Recruitment, &
Selection
Course Code:C 234

Discuss 3 causes of workplace conflict
1. The first cause of conflict is lack of communication. The mayor, upon hearing the overtime by
some of the firefighters, decided alone, without consulting anyone that would be affected by the
decision to completely cut the overtime hours, as well as bringing in an influx of new firefighters.
The firefighters feel blindsided by the decision as they were not consulted or spoken with to see if
there was a way to resolve this in an equitable manner for both sides. Without communication
between both parties, a solution that will be acceptable by both sides will not be presented, only
ensuring that no one is happy with the decision.

2. Perceived unfair policies is the second cause of conflict here. The overtime that the firefighters
had to do was a direct response to the mayor’s directives for coverage due to increased risk of
fires. Those policies, which were probably put on the firefighters without consulting them
resulted in them working a lot of overtime to meet that mandate. And now that the mayor has
seen some of the overtime compensation, he/she has decided to arbitrarily cut overtime and force
new firefighters to be hired. To the firefighters, these changes seem unfair and could be looked
upon as punishment, for simply meeting the mayor’s original mandate for coverage. None of
these policies are beneficial to the team, and only benefit the mayor, leading to a feeling of
unfairness in the way the policies are proposed and implemented.

3. Feeling disrespected is the last area of conflict. The mayor made some insensitive comments
about firefighters not being able to manage their budgets, when really, they have sacrificed their
time and safety in order to ensure that the city was safe, and the mayor’s mandate was met. After
all the work done, and personal investment from the team, the mayor disparages them publicly,
which shows a lack of empathy and lack of appreciation for the hard work the firefighters put into
their jobs.
A. Discuss 2 possible short-term outcomes if the conflict is not resolved
1. Sick outs could be one potential short-term outcome. As a response to the mayor’s mandated
changes to the overtime, firefighters could be calling out sick in large groups on specific days,
putting the city at risk should a large fire occur. There would not be enough firefighters to handle
the emergency. This would not only impact the city negatively, but also the lives of the citizens.
2. Refusal for overtime is also another potential short-term outcome. If firefighters refuse to work
overtime while the city is trying to hire these additional new firefighters, the city would not have
the coverage it needs to fight emergencies, per the mayor’s original mandate. There would be
coverage during “normal” hours, but all the coverage that was afforded to the city due to the
overtime would be gone. This again puts the city and its citizens at risk.
