The four nations
England is only one of four nations of the British Isles:
England – St. George’s cross – rose – white – St. George – 23rd April
Scotland – Dragon of Cadwallader – leek/dafodil – red – St. David – 1st
March
Wales – St. Andrew’s cross / Lion rampant – thistle – blue – ST Andrew –
30th November
Ireland – St. Patrick’s cross/ Rep of Ireland – Shamrock – green- St
Patrick 17th March

Political unification was gradual process took several hundred years.
Completed in 1800 when Irish parliament was joined with the Parliament
of England, Scotland and Wales in Westminster.
In 1922, most of Ireland became separate state.
Four nations diferences:
- racially (Ireland, Wales, Highland Scotland: Celtic) (England,
lowland Scotland: Germanic)
- languages (Celtic areas Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh)
(Germanic dialect)
- economic, social and legal systems

Today blurred but not completely disappeared. Welsh, Scottish and Irish
people feel their identity very strongly.
