Western medicine has developed over the years adopting many new philosophies and
practices along the way. Dr. Larry Dossey distinguished three separate eras of medicine through
these changes. The first two of these being Era I and Era II. Era I came about in the 1860s when
“science was incorporated into medical practice” (Koerner, 2011). Known as the Mechanical
model, Era I considered health, wellness, and consciousness to be entirely mechanical and body-
based entities, based off of the physical brain and its functions. Era II took place in the 1950s
when a mind-body relationship idea was developed. The Body/Mind model of Era II added to the
strict mechanical concept of Era I by including the human mind’s influences on the body.
Attitude, emotions, beliefs, and thoughts would affect the body’s physical well-being (Riley,
2011). Era II integrated the functions of the human mind and body as a “local” experience within
one body (Koerner, 2011).
Although the Bodymodel of Era Iso importantly highlights the physical nature of health, I
do believe that the human mind plays a major role in health and wellness. Era II incorporates the
mind and acknowledges the influence it has on the body’s physical healing. A poor attitude,
negative thoughts, and disbeliefs will hinder the body’s ability to heal. I agree with the concept
of Era II’s Body/Mind model and how important the body and mind feed off of one another’s
energy and structures.

values and beliefs, it is important that they are aware of their personal values and do not allow
