Survey of United States History
Task 1

A. Explain the reasons for English colonization
Originally, English people did not have intentions om colonization. They
were only interested in benefiting from Americas natural resources, until
John Cabot reported the plentiful fish that were present in newfound land.
This caused French, Spanish, Basque, and Portuguese people to rush to take
advantage of the area. English decided to take part in the fishery and
eventually became dominate in the area. Eventually Spanish traders were
seeing success from trading with the Indians, the English noticed this and
people called “sea-dogs” or also known as John Hawkins and Sir Francis
Drake raided a Spanish treasure boat that was on its way home from the
Caribbean. This action caused a war that lead to the defeat of the Spanish
armada. After this defeat is when English leaders started to consider the
idea of colonization because they didn’t want any of their enemies to be
able to dominate the land, and they also wanted better access to trading
goods with the natives. (Norton, 2015)
Some of the social pressures that contributed to starting the process of
colonizing the land were Spain and France mapping areas as “New Spain”
and “New France”. Also an English clergyman named Richard Hakluyt
published two things stating the benefits of colonizing the Americas. But
the first person to get authorization to colonize was Sir Walter Raleigh, his
authorization came after he promoted a scheme to establish trades at
outposts with the Indians and would also serve basis for attacks on Spanish
possessions. The growing population that eventually reached over what
England could handle also caused social pressures to move to the Americas.
People were living in cramped spaces and there weren’t really living wages
being made. The change is religion also contributed to social pressure when
Henry VIII founded the church of England this also drove people to want to
leave England. (Norton, 2015)
