Networking with TCP/IP Unit Assignment #3
Purdue University Global
IT283: Networking with TCP/IP
Unit Assignment #3 Part One:
1. In a short essay, explain the difference between the Ethernet II frame structure and the
Ethernet 802.2 LLC frame structure. What is the minimum and maximum frame size?
How does the Type field compare to the SAP field?
“The physical layer specification for all frame types is the same. It is only at the data link layer,
where these frame types differ.” (Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam, pulled 2021). According to the
reading “the minimum frame size is 64 bytes and the maximum is 1518 bytes.” (Tittel,
J.L.C.L.C. E. 2012). Both Ethernet II and Ethernet 802.2 LLC share the same frame size. The
type field describes the protocol while the SAP field contains the originating protocols and the
destination protocols.
2. Create a brief table/graphic showing three Data Link Layer WAN protocols and their
primary function with the following headings. Protocol Function
Protocol Function
, Unit Assignment #32
Asynchronous Transfer A packet switching protocol that enables encoding of data
Mode (ATM) traffic. “Used by telecommunication networks that uses
asynchronous time-division multiplexing to encode data into
small, fixed-sized cells.” (Techopedia, 2020).
Point-to-Point Protocol “Directly connects two nodes across serial cables. Point-to-
point protocol is a WAN protocol widely used by customers
for dial-up access to the Internet.” (WAN Redundancy, pulled
on 2021).
X.25 “X.25 is a packet-switching protocol for wide area network
(WAN) connectivity that uses a public data network (PDN)
that parallels the voice network of the Public Switched
Telephone Network (PSTN).” (Network Encyclopedia, pulled
on 2021).
Frame Relay Replaced X.25 protocol. “Puts data in a variable-size unit
called a frame and leaves any necessary error correction
(retransmission of data) up to the endpoints, which speeds up
overall data transmission.” (Margaret Rouse, 2015).
3. Create a short four step ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) troubleshooting guide. What
problems can occur with ARP? What can you discover by using the command line utility
ARP?
Trouble shooting steps for ARP would be as follows.
a. Open command-prompt with administrator privileges and then type the command
“ipconfig /all” to determine the IP address and MAC address of the computers within the
LAN.
b. Type “arp -a” to bring up the ARP table. Determine if the MAC address is correct on the
problem computer.
c. Type “arp -d” to clear the cache if the address is incorrect.
